Lily Karmatz

PRIMARY MEDIA AREAS: Contemporary Art of Ikebana - working with nature, creating living sculptures, and installations using plant materials.

TEACHING EXPERIENCE: I have taught Ikebana for the last ten years. During that time, I have conducted Ikebana workshops for different organisations, art societies and local communities commissioned by city councils.

ART PRACTICE: I studied Ikebana in the early 70s' when I was in Japan studying fashion design. In early 90s', I pursued my interest in Ikebana in Australia at the teaching level.I believe a good artist needs to know more than one art form. So, I joined BIA in the late 90s’ to study visual arts to diploma level.

PHILOSOPHY/ THOUGHTS ON TEACHING:“When a beautiful rose dies, beauty does not die because it is not really in the rose. Beauty is an awareness in the mind”. (Agnes Martin)
